Pupils across Watford took part in a tense final of an inter-school spelling competition which almost ended in a tie break.

Holy Rood Catholic Primary School, in Greenbank Road, Watford, held its third super spelling bee on July 4.

The host school was narrowly beaten by Year 6 students at Knutsford, in Balmoral Road, Watford, who had to spell words including conscientious, kaleidoscope, amateur and manoeuvre.

St John's Church of England Primary School, in Estcourt Road came third in the competition.

Savraj Ram, the literacy co-ordinator at Holy Rood Catholic Primary school, said: “It was a great day of spelling which almost ended in a tie break.

“Luckily the school had a countdown style conundrum to use in case this happens where Holy Rood managed to get themselves 20 points and moved up into second place.”
