M'Baye Niang has opened up about the reasons why he will not be returning to Watford next season, following a stop-start loan spell at Vicarage Road.

Having arrived in late January to relative intrigue, the highly rated young forward, once touted by Arsenal, began his Hornets career in fine form, including a starring role in a win over Burnley back in February.

But despite offering a few glimpses of his talent since, the 22-year-old has often flattered to deceive - and limped off to precious little fanfare in his final Watford appearance last weekend.

The Hornets still have a €15-million option on the France forward, but there appears to be little likelihood of this being enforced given the player's wishes.

Now, Niang says "personal reasons" mean he will not seek an extended spell in Hertfordshire - two months after sources close to him indicated he would be keen to stay.

He said: "I owe a lot to the club that gave me a chance to play in a different championship, to experience a new mentality, and that allowed me to play as regularly as I would have liked to.

"But even if Watford have an option to purchase that the management wants to activate, I do not see myself staying there. And that is only for personal reasons.

"I have given myself time to reflect, I weighed up the pros and cons and despite the great opportunity offered by Watford, I do not think my future lies there.

"I ask them to be understanding and accept my decision, which is irrevocable because I will not change my mind."
