Watford Ladies have their first win of the season on the board after beating Sheffield Ladies 2-0 yesterday, building on the momentum gained from an impressive point and performance against title favourites Doncaster Rovers Belles in a 1-1 draw on Thursday night.

The game started in perfect fashion for the Lady Hornets as Merrick Will received a pass from Rinsola Babajide and hit the opener high into the net after just four minutes at Kings Langley’s Gaywood Park home.

As Sheffield looked to get themselves back into the game, Watford goalkeeper Jo Fletcher was on hand to save comfortably from their first shot on target, with Lagan Makin trying her luck from around 25 yards.

The Watford stopper was again called into action when she had to be quick off her line to clear a through ball and prevent either of the two Sheffield players who had broken through the home side’s defensive line from latching onto the pass.

Perhaps the best chance of the half then fell to Sheffield’s Hannah Cain but she shot wide when well placed.

The second half began in a positive manner for the Golden Girls and Babajide was unfortunate to see her shot well blocked by a defender after creating an opening for herself.

Will’s form has been impressive of late and that was no different yesterday. The midfielder’s cross was half cleared to Babajide who found Danielle Puddefoot and her shot was well saved by Juliana Draycott in the Sheffield goal.

With the 90 minutes almost up, Watford were let off the hook as Sheffield had an excellent chance to equalise. Jenna Dear rose to flick the ball through to Suzanne Davies but her shot went agonisingly wide of the left-hand post.

A lengthy stoppage for an injury to Simona Petkova meant that the game had entered the 100th minute by the time Babajide finally got her goal and secured a fine win for the Golden Girls.

“Picking up four points from the last two games has been great – our mentality has changed,” Will told the Women’s Super League website.

“We’ve got positive vibes, especially after the 1-1 draw with Doncaster, which was such a difficult game.

“They are such a quality side, so taking points off them was really good and a massive statement from us.

“Rinsola threatened all match and it’s good for her to get the goal at the end.

“She’s an England international, has quality, and causes teams all sorts of problems.

“I’m really chuffed for her because she always works hard. Her heart’s in it and she’s so passionate.”

The victory lifts Watford three points clear of bottom placed Oxford United Women as they enter the final stages of their Spring Series campaign.
