I’m worried. I was fearful going into the Crystal Palace match and I’m even more concerned now, with another defeat meaning that Watford are now looking over their shoulders at the teams below them in the table, most of whom have picked up positive results recently.

We seem to be sleepwalking into a relegation battle and Walter Mazzarri and some of the players need to wake up and smell the coffee. To hear Mazzarri say he isn’t worried about our league position after Saturday’s game compounded misery for me. He should be.

I said on here after the Millwall game that my patience was wearing thin with Mazzarri, but after wins over Arsenal and Burnley I thought the Italian was starting to turn things around. However, if anything, Watford have regressed after those victories again and if we aren’t careful, we will be right at the heart of the relegation battle.

That’s led to me questioning whether Mazzarri is the right man for the job. I’ve had my doubts for some time, but to see the Hornets have the same problems week-in, week-out is infuriating.

It also comes across on the pitch that the Hornets have little game plan. The players look lost and don’t know what to do and that is plainly obvious to those in the stands.

You look at the West Ham and Southampton games for example. We took the lead early on in both games, but instead of then taking the incentive to the opposition, we nervously sat back and let them attack us. Only when we went behind or were pegged back on level terms in both games did we start playing again.

It happened against Burnley as well. The players have looked nervous and confused in all of those games.

Another reason why many fans are so frustrated is because they feel they have no connection with the head coach and I feel the same as well.

The language barrier has been an issue, but Mazzarri hasn’t done enough to endear himself to Watford supporters. He rarely recognises the supporters and it feels like he hasn’t done enough to immerse himself into life at Watford.

To me, it feels like the Italian just views the Watford job as a stepping stone so that he can get himself a bigger job either in England or in his home country.

The fact he’s also been pictured smoking a cigarette shortly after Saturday’s game is something that doesn’t sit well with me either. Why isn’t he talking to the team?

How can he be telling players to not do certain things, when he himself is not setting a good example by smoking shortly after the game?

It might not be something which is wrong in Italy, but it certainly isn’t something which sits comfortably with me and many others in England.

We were led to believe that Mazzarri was going to be the man to take us to the next level, but ultimately, he has failed to deliver.

I still believe the departure of Quique Sanchez Flores was the right move, but at this moment in time, I’m not necessarily sure if Mazzarri is the right man to take us forward.

Maybe this Watford squad does need more investment and Mazzarri should be given time to stamp more of his authority on this team.

However, at this moment I can hardly say I’m confident going into the rest of the season with the Italian in charge. Either way, I think a major rethink is needed sooner rather than later.

Whatever happens, we’ve got two weeks to prepare ourselves for the game against Sunderland and that is going to be huge. Season-defining, some would say.

Win it and we’re one win away from safety. Lose and we’re right in the relegation battle.
