Luther Blissett has described the plan to build a statue of Graham Taylor as a brilliant idea and a fitting way to pay tribute to the club legend.

The statue will be commissioned and sited at Vicarage Road, with the location to be agreed with Taylor's family and Watford Borough Council.

The Hornets' record goalscorer described Taylor as a father-figure to him and believes the tribute is testament to the contribution he made at the club.

Blissett said: “It’s absolutely fantastic that they’re doing it.

“I think it’s a brilliant idea and there is nobody more linked to the club than Graham Taylor himself.

“I think it’s a great testament to the impact Graham had at Watford.

“It will be very fitting for him there’s no doubt about it.”

The former Watford striker added: “For me it’s a really fitting way to have a permanent reminder of Graham every time you walk around the ground.

“I think the fact they are building a statue reaffirms the legacy of Graham Taylor and what he stands for at Watford.”

Watford have also confirmed a pre-season tribute fixture, which is expected to become an annual event, will be arranged to take place at Vicarage Road ahead of the Hornets’ 2017/18 campaign.

Blissett said: “For a lot of people that weren’t able to attend the funeral itself, it will be a chance for them to come together and celebrate his life and achievements. It’s a fantastic idea.”

The club’s most successful manager passed away last month at the age of 72. Taylor led the Hornets from the Fourth Division to runners-up in the old First Division, into Europe and the 1984 FA Cup Final. The former England manager also guided them to back-to-promotions, in his second spell, as they returned to the top-flight.

Taylor became chairman in 2009 and Watford renamed the Rous Stand after him three years ago.

His funeral was held at the start of this month with hundreds of fans and figures from the football world paying their respects to the legendary manager.
