Signings from Sheffield United and Burnley score in Watford win

Two Watford signings grabbed their first goals for the club as the Hornets ran out 3-1 winners at non-league Wealdstone.

Former Sheffield United winger Mark Yeates put his side in front at Grosvenor Vale and Chris Iwelumo doubled the visitors' lead just before the break.

Richard Jolly pulled one back for Wealdstone in the second half but another strike from substitute Marvin Sordell made sure of the win.

As Sean Dyche had confirmed earlier in the day, Prince Buaben was not involved but three of the other four new signings started for Watford.

Former Dundee midfielder Craig Forsyth started on the left and ex-Sheffield United winger Yeates was on the other flank, with Iwelumo starting up top less than 12 hours after his move from Burnley was confirmed.

Watford's first chance came in just the second minute as the ball came to Troy Deeney eight yards out but his effort was saved by former Hornets goalkeeper Jonathan North – although the offside flag was raised.

The visitors started with purpose and kept the ball well early on. Ross Jenkins was next to try his luck as his shot from distance was deflected comfortably into the arms of North.

Iwelumo started to make his prescence felt a little more as the half wore on and moments after the striker almost got in front of his marker from a Forsyth cross, he beat North to another delivery from the left, only for the ref to blow his whistle.

There were some neat little spells from the Hornets at different times during the first half and they should have tested North again in the 20th minute when a slick move released Deeney inside the box. But he opted to cross, unsuccessfully, instead of shooting.

Watford then had another two efforts in the following 30 seconds with Jenkins' blocked shot and Deeney forcing North into a decent stop at his near post.

Wealdstone's forays into the Hornets' third were few and far between early on but they had two efforts in quick succession, as Richard Jolly lofted a shot over and Tashan Jordan's strike was deflected over.

Iwelumo's hold-up play was good and he almost grabbed his first goal for the club when he headed wide from an angled cross by Jenkins.

North was by far the busier keeper and it took Wealdstone until almost the half hour mark to force Scott Loach into his first stop when the former England Under-21 keeper comfortably held David Hick's low strike from 20 yards.

The Hornets finished the half strongly though and two new boys scored for the Hornets before the half came to a close.

Not long after Forsyth had a shot trickle wide, Eustace intercepted a pass to release Yeates and the former Sheffield United man dribbled into the box and curled his right-footed shot into the far post to break the deadlock.

Yeates then almost set up Deeney, whose neat flick was deflected just wide, and from the resulting corner, Forsyth had a powerful shot blocked.

Iwelumo was causing real problems and he forced North into the stop of the half with a thunderous shot from 18 yards.

The new arrival from Burnley got his goal though as good wide play from Lee Hodson saw Iwelumo direct his volley into bottom corner expertly, despite Hodson's cross being deflected.

The visitors made just one change at the break as Marvin Sordell came on for Lloyd Doyley, with Forsyth moving to left back and Deeney dropping to right midfield.

Watford started the second period flying as Iwelumo fired wide of the near post less than two minutes in and then North needed to make a great double save.

Yeates curled a 20 yard strike against the crossbar which Deeney reacted quickest to. North saved well to deny the former Walsall man but his second stop to deny Iwelumo was outstanding – to keep the score 2-0.

Yeates was lively and would have hoped to have done better after beating a few players on the edge of the area, only to drag his shot wide Wealdstone had been under pressure but almost equalised in a matter of minutes.

Alex Dyer showed good trickery to release Jolly inside Adrian Mariappa and the striker's early shot beat Loach at his near post.

And the home side almost levelled when Mariappa's header did not clear the area and Nikki Ahamed smashed a shot which Loach needed to parry away.

Watford made nine changes on 66 minutes, with Scott Loach being the only one out of the starting XI to remain on the pitch as the visitors switched to a 4-3-3 formation.

The game was a little flat for a while but Watford made it 3-1 a little out of the blue with 11 minutes remaining. Former Wealdstone loanee Gavin Massey passed to another in Sordell and his sharp turn and quickly-taken finish from just outside the area beat North.

Watford picked up the pace in the final ten minutes and Sordell was not far from grabbing a second when he fired past the far post from a tight angle.

Sordell then turned provider as he sent in a low cross which was just inches too far ahead of the diving Britt Assombalonga.

Walker fired over from distance twice in a matter of minutes, Piero Mingoia curled a free kick past the post and Chez Isaac called North into action again from distance, but the Hornets couldn't add a fourth.

Wealdstone: North; Hammond (Conti), Cronin, Locke, Chappell; Ahamed, Dyer, Hicks (Lumsden), Jordan (Wallace); Dean (Knight), Jolly (Beardsworth).

Watford: Loach; Hodson (Thompson 66), Mariappa (Mirfin 66), Taylor (Bennett 66), Doyley (Sordell 45); Yeates (Assombalonga 66), Eustace (Isaac 66), Jenkins (Walker 66), Forsyth (Oshodi 66); Iwelumo, Deeney (Mingoia 66), (Massey 66).

Good for confidence to see 2 of the new guys get on the mark early and Sordell coming on to get his goal.

How could it look anything other than rubbish! surely not another season with this clown as our number 1?

Looks as though Iwelumo made an instant impact and is coming together nicely. Sure that we will sign a left back soon and a few loanees to follow in August. Maybe Weiman for the season.

Really looking forward to the new season.

Did anyone else see the documentary last night about 'how to buy a football club', whereas looks as though Basini may well have saved us from a far worse state of Asian gambling ownership.

I was there tonight. Comfortable win and a good early work out. Very strong team for 65 minutes before Dyche made the inevitable Fabio like multiple subs. Yeates looks a good signing, very very busy and took his goal well. Iwelumo looked incredibly sharp considering he only signed today and could have scored more. Marvin came on at half time and also looked good. Obviously the strength of the opposition must be considered, but I saw alot to be hopeful about. Eusty and Tiny were on top form and even Loach wasn't that bad with a couple of good saves but the ball went through his legs for their goal. I have to say that Wealdstone were very welcoming and it was an enjoyable evening. Roll on the new season!

This guy Foxton must go to a lot of matches if he thinks Wealdstone are a pub team, it would better if Foxton Foxed off.

Good reading, what is the first impression of Brucie Forsyth, quick, tricky, medioca?

In my view Forsyth looked ok but made less of an instant impact. He looked tidy on the left side and slotted in at left back without any problems in the second half when Lloyd came off...

I also went to the game this evening. Certainly the first 25 minutes were very high tempo and worryingly didn't seem to suit us. We created few clear cut chances but when we did our ex-Goalkeeper Jonathan North was superb. Forsyth didn't impress me tonight nor at Borehamwood. A winger needs to have a change of pace or tricks to gain a yard or so for a cross, dribble or shot - Forsysth doesn't appear to possess either. As for the match tonight I though our 'second string' did better than the starting 11. It is difficult to tell because the Stones would have been tiring by 60 minutes, however our subs came on when the Stones were in the ascendency and yet we started to dominate possession - Walker and Isaac kept the ball far better than Eustace and Jenko. Also Tommo provided more attacking options on the right hand side. having said that Hodson did get forward well during the first half. Overall a good game but I think Dychy would have expected to come in 2 or 3 up at halftime with the strong starting 11 he named.

watford were great tonight.... lovely flowing football... sordell looks one for the future.... wealdstone were not bad either... they had a left winger number 11, was pretty decent.. didnt give the ball away, wish he ran at the defence abit more, and was upsetting to see him come off so early.... hope both team hav a great season

Oi! Scott Loach is Great. He makes a few mistakes in the season and you give him so much stick! He is still quite young and is learning. Rene Gilmartin made a reallly bad howler against Brighton in the FA cup last year, Loach wouldn't have made that mistake! So shut up about Scott Loach being Bad!

My mate went to the game last night and had his picture taken with Sam Vokes?

He told him that he has signed a 3 year contract with Watford with the option of a 4th year?

I have a feeling that my mate is having me on, maybe Vokes was just visiting friends as he said the transfer fee was over a million quid with add-ons and I just can’t see Watford spending that sort of money at the moment?

Anyway, though he still has best years ahead of him, his goals record is pretty poor (only about 25 career goals in about 115 games, most of which were for bournemouth in the lower leagues..

Good to see how well Uwelumo did considering he's only just arrived.
Happy with Yeates, though his delivery at corners was poor.
Driving home I heard an interview with SD on Talksport.
He said we're on the verge of another signing and that there was someone else who alos may be coming though the deal had hit problems.

But surely we were 2-0 up at half time and could have been alot more. It's all about individual opinions of course, but I thought we looked pretty sharp and pinged it around pretty well in that first 25 mins with pretty much total domination of possession. I do agree we didn't create many clear cut opportunities in that spell though. I did like the fact that Iwelumo looked like he played in this team for ages when he'd hardly had time to meet his new team mates!. North did play a blinder and Stones are a decent Ryman League side (Dyer and Jolly are good players) so it was def a good work out...but just that...a work out.

1:52pm Wed 20 Jul 11

I cant see any substantial evidence of Sam Vokes signing for Watford, the Wiki page which I just looked at states that he is still a Wolves player.

Anyway, more pressing issues which are a-foot are:

a) Sordell is poised to join Southampton in a deal supposedly worth £3.5m rising to £5m depending on promotion, apps etc

Now, I dont think that this is going to happen, but £3.5 would be a good price and we would still have time (and money) to find a replacement.

I have heard on the old "rumour mill" that we have approached Villa about signing Weimann on a permanent deal, value of around £1m

b) Shefki Kuqi, rumoured to be signing on a free as cover for "Big Chris" 12 month deal (he must be on good money and wouldnt think that he would fit in our structure) but you never know.

c) J Lloyd-Samuel free transfer, apparantly been on trial at Leeds and before that Watford...dont know about this one, and

d) The Left Back Crisis Solved - 25yr old Paul Dixon from Dundee Utd.

As I stated above, all of these are rumours, and I have heard ducks f*rt in a pond before, but there seems to be a lot of movement going on. A lot more than in previous seasons where we here nothing until the last minute.

I think that this is a good thing, is anyone else aware of these rumours, if so, shed any light?

Its also been reported that when Dyche Welches on us and goes to Wrexham (Wales) Ken Furphy is ready to take over the reigns.
If we build it they will come!!
