England’s batsmen endured a miserable start to the Test summer as they were bowled out for 184 by Pakistan at Lord’s.

Alastair Cook scored 70 but he was the only member of England’s top four who reached double figures on the opening day of the first Test as Hasan Ali and Mohammad Abbas each took four wickets for the visitors.

Opener Mark Stoneman, skipper Joe Root and Dawid Malan all departed inside the opening 70 minutes of play after England had elected to bat, while Jonny Bairstow added 27 before being bowled in the afternoon.

Cook’s 56th Test half-century gave the Lord’s crowd something to celebrate, but England collapsed after he was bowled by Mohammad Amir.

Ben Stokes (38) and Jos Buttler (14) fell within three balls of each other at the start of the evening session, the former after Pakistan successfully reviewed for lbw before the returning Buttler nicked to second slip when attempting to drive Hasan.

Debutant Dom Bess (five), Mark Wood (seven) and Stuart Broad (nought) all departed cheaply as the last five wickets fell for just 16 runs.
