Moor Park golfer Matt Wallace described his victory at the Open de Portugal as a dream come true.

After carding birdie laden scores in the first two rounds of play, Wallace held a three shot lead heading into the final round of the tournament, but saw his advantage cut to a single shot by Sebastian Heisele and Julian Suri.

However, the 27-year-old professional for the Rickmansworth club kept his cool to produce a spotless final day and secure a win which he will savour for some time.

“It’s the best feeling ever,” the Pinner-based professional told the European Tour website. “It has always been a dream to win on the European Tour.

“Those first two days were really easy, that third day was the hardest day of my life and today was tough but it’s so satisfying and I’m really happy.

“A good friend of mine, Tom Lewis, won here in Portugal and I spoke to him yesterday and he has great memories and I’m going to as well.”

Wallace was on form from the off in Portugal as he carded a superb 10-under-par on the opening day to lead by a single shot.

A seven-under second round helped solidify his stranglehold at the top of the leader board after his opening 36 holes featured no bogeys.

After battling with windy conditions to make a level-par 73 on Saturday, he made a steady start to the fourth and decisive round of play with six straight pars before extending his lead on the seventh and ninth.

Perhaps the decisive moment of the tournament came on the 13th, however, when he recovered from a poor drive to set-up a birdie putt on the par-five.

“That was the turning point where I thought ‘right, I’ve got this,” Wallace said of his effort on that hole.

"I didn't see it coming, I never envisioned standing here, I just tried to go through my processes and work as hard as I could to be standing here today.

"I'll have a few beers."
