Wealdstone sealed a place in the third round of the FA Trophy with a momentous 2-1 win at National League Southport on Saturday.

The club may not be having the season it would have hoped for in the National League South, but is now one victory from a quarter-final place in the cup which has long been cherished in north London.

Around 250 Stones fan travelled to Merseyside for the cup clash where goals in either half from Danny Green and Ricky Wellard put the Stones through.

Gordon Bartlett's side will now host Stockport County or Brackley Town as they search for a quarter-final place for the first time in five years.

Sheffield United loanee Jake Wright had the first chance for the hosts at Haig Avenue, but his header was saved by Jonathon North.

The restored Matty Whichelow then flashed a shot wide of Magnus Norman's post at the other end as Wealdstone came into the game.

Wright and Green both had chances as the opening period became increasingly end-to-end, before Whichelow again was just off target.

With half-time closing in, Wellards rampaged into the box and turned the ball back for Green to open the scoring five minutes before the interval.

The vigour with which Southport re-emerged after the break gave some indication of the tongue-lashing they may have received in the dressing room, and they put Stones under real pressure for the first time in the game.

Within eight minutes of the restart they were level, when Wright finally found the target with a downward header beyond North.

The momentum the hosts were building up was tangible, but so was its evaporation when home defender Josh Thompson was stretchered off following a lengthy stoppage.

With the bit back between their teeth, Ciaron Brown went close for Wealdstone, but a superb winner would soon follow.

Wellard picked up the ball in midfield before embarking on a fine 20-yard solo run, and smashed the ball beyond Norman from the edge of the box.

Southport had little in response but when eight minutes of added time were added on, it could have spelled difficulties for Bartlett's men.

However, it was Weadlstone who came closest to adding to their tally, when substitute Nathan Mavila burst forward and found Norman equal to his effort.

Wealdstone: North, Sheckleford, Goulding, Oshodi, Brown, Godfrey, Cox, Wellard (Mavila 87), Whichelow (Wright 77), Green (Koroma 90), Benyon.

Not used: Hamblin, McGleish.
