Wealdstone suffered a second pre-season defeat as they lost 2-1 to Staines Town at Wheatsheaf Park on Tuesday thanks to a late penalty.tWehe

Stones came into the game following a 1-0 defeat to League Two outfit Stevenage on Saturday and were keen to get a positive result.

Gordon Bartlett's side started well and were rewarded when an in swinging corner was headed into his own net by Staines defender Daren Purse for an own goal.

After the goal the pressure on the Staines goal continued and Wealdstone would have been two goals to the good but for a Staines defender clearing a shot off the line.

Towards the end of the half Wealdstone had some of their own to do; a Staines cross into the Wealdstone box leaving the Stones' defence to scrap it away.

The second half continued like the end of the first with Staines piling on the pressure and nearly leveling when a fizzing shot narrowly went past the Wealdstone goal.

The Swans again created opportunities and should have levelled the scores when an unmarked striker faintly volleyed the ball straight at the Stones keeper when he really should have done better.

Despite the pressure they found themselves under, Stones still looked good on the break and had chances to score but they failed to challenge the Staines keeper.

Staines eventually got the goal their play deserved when a sweeping move was fantastically finished by Jack Hutchinson who bent it past the Stones keeper into the top corner leaving him with no chance.

For the last ten minutes it was end-to-end and either team could have won it, but with just a minute left the Stones gave away a penalty which was converted by Ahmed Abdualla to settle the contest with a minute to spare.

Wealdstone now play a pre-season friendly against Dover Athletic at home on Saturday before facing more League 2 opposition in Wycombe Wanderers next Tuesday night.
