Marcus Trescothick added a fluent 76 to his first innings century as Somerset built a strong position by tea on the third day of the LV=County Championship match with Middlesex at Taunton.

The hosts had reached 211 for five in their second innings to lead by 302, skipper Trescothick leading the way with 12 fours and 2 sixes before becoming one of two victims for Ollie Rayner.

James Hildreth followed up his first innings 187 by moving to 41 not out at tea, while Tom Cooper contributed 42.

Earlier, Lewis Gregory finished with six for 101 as Middlesex added only 11 runs to their overnight 306 for seven to trail by 91.

The 22-year-old seamer sent back James Franklin (46) and Steven Finn, both lbw.

Last man Tim Murtagh was unable to bat because of a side injury sustained in the warm-up, which also prevented him bowling in the Somerset second innings.
