Harrow potter Martin Gould admits he is leaving no stone unturned as he attempts to climb the world snooker rankings once again.

Gould, who broke back into the top 32 after qualifying for the World Championship last month, heads to China this week as he prepares for the Wuxi Classic and Australian Open.

He is flying out early to compete in the first Asian Tour event on the Players’ Tour Championship in the hope he will be acclimatised to the time difference by the time Wuxi starts.

However, 32-year-old Gould is aiming to cut back on his air miles this season as he bids to remain in top shape by the time the World Championship rolls around again next April.

“I’m looking at different avenues to make sure I’m ready for a good season because I don’t want to let myself down at any point,” Gould said.

“I’ve had a little bit of a rethink recently. There is still one or two events I won’t go to – I probably won’t go to Haikou and I probably won’t go to Beijing [for the China Open].

“Beijing is too close to the World Championship qualifiers and if I’m not in the top 16 by that point I would rather focus on them.

“I will see how the season is progressing and then I can work a way around and see what’s best for me so that I don’t tire myself out.

“I need to make sure that I keep myself fighting fit and I’m thinking about starting to go to the gym to see if that will help.”

After losing a tight contest to Marco Fu in the first round of the world championship, Gould has made an encouraging start to the new season.

He won both Wuxi and Australian qualifiers in comfortable style – and insists there is plenty more to come.

“I’m playing well in practice and have done a lot of hard work with my coach but I haven’t quite hit my A game yet,” added Gould.

“It’s quite pleasing to know I’m winning matches not playing well as that’s always a good sign.

“It’s still early season. If you’re producing too quickly then you might run out of steam towards the end somewhere so I’m not concerned.

“I feel good in myself, I know I’ve put in a lot of hard work and I feel like my game is at a good position especially from how I finished off last season.

“I’ve not quite produced what I know I can but at the end of the day the main thing is I’m picking up victories.”
