Wealdstone striker Scott McGleish believes the Stones are the best side in the division and is determined to fire them to the double this season.

The Stones are third in the Ryman Premier Division but have five games in hand on the two sides above them.

Gordon Bartlett’s side also host Harefield United tonight [Thursday] in their Middlesex Senior Cup semi-final so two trophies are well within their sights.

McGleish said: “We believe we’re the best team in the division. That doesn’t mean you go up because the best team doesn't always win it.

“But we believe we're strongly in there and results have really gone our way this weekend with everyone losing.

“We believe we can be up there and get that top spot. It would be nice to finish off with a little double with winning the Middlesex Cup as well.”

The Stones’ latest league matches against Margate and East Thurrock United were postponed due to waterlogged pitches this week.

Speaking after Saturday’s postponement at Margate, McGleish said: “It’s another game in hand. You'd rather have points on the board than games in hand but at least it’s a match where the others haven’t picked up any points on us. “ Many people claim the title looks to be Wealdstone’s to lose now, with all their games in hand, but the manager does not agree with this.

Bartlett said: “I’ve read quotes saying it is our title to lose but I don’t necessarily go along with that.

“We will take nothing for granted and just concentrate on getting more points than the other teams.”

Wealdstone will face a punishing schedule during the run-in and admits it will be a challenge for the promotion contenders.

Bartlett said: “It’s very frustrating because it means we will have three games a week for the rest of the season.

“The good thing is we haven’t played for two games and all of the top sides have got beaten. If people falter it will only help us on our way.

“But it’s all about us being professional, doing our job and not getting complacent.”

Wealdstone have the incentive of getting past Harefield because the final will take place at their ground.

Bartlett said: “The league is the priority but we want to win every match and it would be nice to win a trophy.”

The Stones are scheduled to return to league action this weekend with a trip to Carshalton Athletic and then visit Wingate & Finchley on Tuesday night.

Bartlett said: “They are two sides towards the bottom but that doesn’t make a blind bit of difference and we will treat them like any other opponents.”
