Wealdstone bounced back from their defeat at Canvey Island with a 2-1 win at Enfield Town in the Ryman Premier Division.

It was a much-needed victory for the Stones after failing to win away from home since November.

Wealdstone boss Gordon Bartlett said: “‘It’s a nice feeling to get back to winning ways. We were not brilliant by any stretch but we changed the formation slightly in the second half and it worked much better.

“Our resolute defending in the first half gave us the platform and it was also pleasing that our first goal came from a set play that we had worked on in training.”

It was the home side who threatened first when Joe O’Brien dragged a shot past the post.

Steve Newing’s team thought they should have had a penalty when Sean Cronin appeared to bundle over David Kendall in the area but the referee waved play on.

Bartlett’s side came close to going in front at the break but Leon Smith headed the ball wide from Michael Alaile’s cross.

Wealdstone grabbed the lead at the start of the second half when Elliot Godfrey’s corner was powerfully headed home by Wes Parker.

However their advantage lasted just eight minutes before Adam Wallace’s shot hit the post and rebounded out for Tyler Campbell to bundle in the equaliser.

The Stones grabbed the winner 15 minutes from time though when Alex Dyer picked up the ball 20 yards out and evaded two challenges before firing into the far corner.

Enfield kept pushing in search of a point but were denied late on when Kendall’s strike was tipped over the bar by Rikki Banks.

Town boss Steve Newing said: “We deserved at least a draw if not a win and that bodes well because Wealdstone are a very good side who still have a chance of winning the league.

“We acquitted ourselves very well and the performance was really good. Everyone was bitterly disappointed that we got nothing from the game.”

The Stones’ home match against Bury Town was postponed on Monday due to the snow.

Fourth placed Wealdstone are due to entertain Margate this weekend.
