Chris Iwelumo should make his first outing in the yellow of Watford tonight after manager Sean Dyche revealed Prince Buaben is the only new Hornets signing who is unlikely to feature at Wealdstone.

Iwelumo became Watford’s fifth signing this morning after joining former Dundee United midfielder Buaben and ex-Sheffield United winger Mark Yeates in arriving at Vicarage Road in the last week.

Centre back David Mirfin and left midfielder Craig Forsyth, who joined from Scunthorpe United and Dundee respectively, both appeared in the 2-2 draw with Boreham Wood on July 9 and Dyche expects Buaben to be the only new arrival to miss out.

When asked if supporters can expect to see the five new signings this evening, Dyche replied: “The fans can certainly expect to get a glimpse of the new signings. We are hoping some will play longer than others as it depends on the fitness, “Prince has come in later so he won’t figure tonight almost definitely because he is not quite there yet and we want players to be injury free and healthy.

“We do not demand too much too early if they haven’t played. But he is training well and adapting nicely.

“As many as we can will be involved and in and around it tonight.”

Dyche did not mention any other absentees by name when asked, although we understand Matty Whichelow should also miss out as he has only just returned to training after being left at home for the France trip due to injury.

Speaking to the Watford Observer this afternoon, Dyche said: “They are all back in and around it; some we will have to be careful with and some will play more than the others.

“We are not at the point where we are throwing teams in for 90 minutes, we are still playing sections - around 60 minutes will be the max at the moment.

“We are looking to build not only fitness but also performances - both individually and as a team.

“We are doing it a step at a time because we do not want to peak now, we want to peak on the first game of the season and beyond.”

When asked whether Watford will put out a strong side, Dyche added: “We are making progress with signings by bringing people in the building, that makes a difference. There are players who are now fit who wasn’t for Boreham Wood, so that makes a difference.

“As the squad gets stronger, then naturally the side will get stronger - so yes the side we put out will be a strong one.”

The Hornets started their pre-season campaign with a 2-2 draw against non-league Boreham Wood in a game with few highlights.

Dyche mentioned after the match that the trip to France would involve more tactical work but the Watford boss is still not concerned with performances at this stage.

Dyche said: “Performance levels are for other people. We know what our performance level should be and we were happy with the display at Boreham Wood because we believe in the progress of players. Most clubs do not play in the first week of pre-season, let alone play seven scholars or whatever it was.

“So the performance at Boreham Wood was not a concern, it was about getting them fit and ready to go.”

Wealdstone and manager Gordon Bartlett are classed as ‘friends’ of Watford, with numerous young players going on loan to the non-league club.

So the club are keen to attract a decent crowd to Grosvenor Vale, where tickets are £10 for adults, £5 for seniors and students and £2 for Under-16s. Kick-off is 7.45pm.
