Stones face selection dilemma

Wealdstone manager Gordon Bartlett says he has a selection "headache" ahead of the new season.

The Stones start with a tricky away trip to Hastings United tomorrow and there are still positions in the team that are up for grabs. Bartlett has brought in experienced striking duo Scott Fitzgerald and Danny Burnell this summer but the pre-season form of Greg Ngoyi means no-one is certain of a first-team spot.

"We've had 12 games during pre-season and performances have been good. We've tried to introduce new things and some have worked, some haven't," said Bartlett.

"Greg Ngoyi didn't have the best of seasons last year but the signings of Fitzgerald and Burnell has really given him a spark and he’s got seven goals. It gives me a few headaches because all the strikers have done well. To be honest I think I've got headaches about all the squad."

Another problem for Bartlett is the goalkeeping position after Sean Thomas picked up an injury in Monday night's 1-0 win over Enfield Town.

That means 17-year-old Jonathan North, who was released by Watford at the end of last season, will start between the sticks at the weekend.

"Sean came back and sprained his ankle and is going to be out for a couple of weeks which is a blow. But I think Jonathan has done well and will be ready.

"I think it will be the same as usual as far as Hastings are concerned. They've had a very good pre season and finished just below us last year. They fancy themselves but I'm looking to get four points in the first two games."

Wealdstone missed out on a play-off spot last year but Bartlett believes his team can go one better this time around.

"We always aim to better ourselves from the previous season. Last year we finished sixth and the season before we finished seventh.

"But we have no divine right over all the other clubs and we'll have to work hard and improve on the little things that we got wrong last season."
