Watford's trip to Newcastle on Saturday will be refereed by an official still wet behind the ears in Premier League terms.

Chris Kavanagh only took charge of his first top-flight game in April, and has now been named among the Select Group officials who will prowl the Premier League circuit full-time.

The Lancashire official has rocketed up the league pyramid, and only took charge of his first Football League game in 2012, at the age of 27.

His rise is not out of desperation, though, as he has developed a reputation as a rising star in the refereeing game, as well as one who can control games well - he issued only three red cards in 40 matches across the whole of last season.

This year, he has already received praise from Chelsea and Brighton fans for displays in charge of their top-flight games.

Kavanagh has only refereed Watford once, their 3-1 defeat at Huddersfield in 2015, when Odion Ighalo was on target for the Golden Boys.
