Marco Silva is targeting an improvement on both of Watford's two Premier League seasons, the new head coach has announced, saying he was enticed to join the Hornets because of the club "wanting more" from its future.

A disappointing campaign last season saw the Golden Boys lose their final six games to finish 17th in the Premier League, on the back of a 13th-place run in 2015/16.

But Silva is already hoping to exceed both of those results in his first season at Vicarage Road, with both manager and board seemingly in alignment over their hopes for the campaign.

"Our main goal is to continue to stay in the Premier League, but we want to do better than the last two seasons," he said.

"That’s important as well to us, and the way I work is to think game-by-game, prepare week-by-week, and be strong on matchdays. We have one goal in our mind, and if you believe like I do then we can.

"The club weren’t happy with the situation and wanted to prove again Watford is a Premier League club - but Gino said to me he and the board want more.

"To do that you need more than just ambition, you need to improve the squad and all these things they said to me we will do, and at that moment I took the decision."

Silva is bidding to be come the first head coach to last more than a year at Vicarage Road since Gianfranco Zola, with this summer bringing a new face to the hotseat for the third season in succession.

But the 39-year-old is not concerned about his predecessors' records, and was confident when asked about his prospects of a longer-term stay.

He said: "I signed for two years, because if I didn’t believe I would be here that long I would only sign for one.

"I signed for two years and I could have signed for four, but you think day-by-day.

"It’s important to improve every day. First of all through my players, what I want for the team, and how we play and what we want for each match."
