Moor Park golfers Matt Wallace and Callum Shinkwin will need to shoot sub-70 rounds if they are to have a chance of making the final two rounds of the BMW PGA Championship.

Both players are making their debut at the prestigious Wentworth event, but carded disappointing scores following their opening 18 holes yesterday.

Wallace, who only gained his European Tour card a fortnight ago by winning the Open de Portugal, made a four-over-par 76, while Shinkwin’s hopes of making the cut are more slender following a six-over 78.

Following the completion of his round, last year’s six-time Alps Tour victor tweeted:

Having birdied the par three second, bogeys at seven and nine (both par fours) and the par five 12th saw the 27-year-old drop back to two-over, but his hopes were boosted by a birdie at the next hole, the par four 13th.

However, a bogey at the par three 14th saw Wallace drop shots on three straight holes and he disappointingly finished with four consecutive fives, having had to settle for par on the two closing par fives.

His Bushey-based club-mate’s encountered serious problems early in his rounds with a triple-bogey eight at the par five fourth and further dropped shots at six and nine saw him go out in a five-over score of 40.

The 24-year-old immediately recovered two of those with back-to-back birdies at 10 and 11, only for him to double bogey the par four 15th and let another shot go on the next hole.

The cut is currently projected to come at one-over, while at the business end of the tournament Sweden’s Johan Carlsson was the overnight leader on six-under.
