Garry Monk will find himself near the top of Watford owner Gino Pozzo's shortlist to be Watford head coach should he miss out on first-choice Marco Silva.

Sources close to the Hornets' stakeholder have revealed he is open to the prospect of appointing Monk, who resigned from Leeds United earlier today.

The 38-year-old former Swansea boss missed out on the play-offs with Leeds after an end-of-season slump.

But his brief reign at Elland Road has been considered a successful one - to the extent that the Whites' new chairman Andrea Radrizzani was left stunned by his decision to leave.

Monk would become the first English-born boss appointed since the beginning of Pozzo's five-year reign, but the Italian has his eyes firmly fixed on Silva, whose future should be decided within the coming days.

The bookies' favourite left Hull City this evening and so, like Monk, is a free agent.

Having brought the left-for-dead Tigers within a sniff of Premier League survival his stock is high, and Crystal Palace are ready to lure him to Selhurst Park should he reject Watford's advances.
