Steven Berghuis is ready to walk away from Watford in the summer if it is not clear he will be a part of the first team next season.

Sources close to the player have revealed his first preference is to return to Watford and remain at Vicarage Road next season.

But if it looks likely he will play a bit-part role similar to the one he was restricted to during his first campaign with the Hornets last year, he will look to leave Hertfordshire permanently in search of first-team football.

Berhguis has proven a shrewd loan signing for Eredivisie leaders Feyenoord as they close in on a first Dutch title since 1999, scoring seven times.

This season has been more productive than the last for the winger who made only nine appearances from the bench for Watford in 2015/16.

There were calls to bring Berghuis back to Vicarage Road in January but Watford eventually resisted, and he will instead return to the club at the end of this season.
