A rolling stone gathers no moss, as the saying goes, and Gordon Bartlett's Wealdstone outfit are certainly picking up the pace with a fifth-straight victory at Weston-super-Mare tonight.

The Stones boss labelled their 2-1 win the 'hardest' of his side's impressive run to date, with the hosts boasting promotion form of their own in recent weeks following the appointment of namesake Scott Bartlett in October.

A three-and-a-half-hour trip to the West Country did not deter the visitors in the opening stages at the Woodspring Stadium, in a re-arranged game which had originally fallen foul of poor weather last month.

The Stones controlled the early play and should have led when Aryan Tajbkhsh forced a double-save from Seagulls goalkeeper Luke Purnell.

Home captain Dayle Grubb opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark from the edge of the box after Weston had clawed their way back into the game teritorially, and the hosts ended the opening half on top.

But with their manager's team talk still ringing in their ears, the Stones' response could not have been better; a close-range finish from Dagenham loanee Joe White, within three minutes of the restart, levelled the scores.

Weston have lost just two of their last 12 National League South games for a reason, and continued pressing, with Grubb and substitute Gethyn Hill coming close.

The Stones continued to show the grit and determination of recent weeks to keep the scores level, and could have led through Tajbakhsh - only for him to blast over from close range.

They were eventually rewarded for their efforts nine minutes from time when Elliot Godfrey shrugged off two challenges on the edge of the Seagulls box, before firing beyond Purnell for what would prove the winner.

The result lifts Wealdstone level with eighth-placed St Albans City - and perhaps daring to dream of overturning a 10-point gap to the play-offs.

"Weston are a good side," said a delighted Bartlett after the game. "They are talented but they have a lot of young players.

"We said at half-time if we could nick a goal it could turn the game because of their inexperience, and that's what happened - I think we were mentally stronger in the end.

"Everyone I spoke to before the game said what a good side they were and on what I saw tonight I agree. It was the hardest test from our winning streak, certainly.

"To come away from a long trip like this with three points is great, we put in a really dogged and gritty performance.

"Our mental strength was questioned earlier in the season, but we've seen the other side of these players in the last few weeks.

"When you go in 1-0 down at the break, you go in and say what you've got to say and look in the players' eyes - and they had hunger and belief in them today. If you've got that in your group, you'll get your rewards."
