Mauro Zarate admits head coach Walter Mazzarri played a part in convincing him to join Watford along with the lure of a return to the Premier League.

The striker completed his permanent move to the Hornets from Fiorentina last month and made his debut in yesterday's win over Burnley.

Zarate said: “I had the chance to come here to Watford and I’m very happy because the Premier League for me is the best league in the world.

"The gaffer is an Italian coach and I know him as well so I wanted to play for Watford and I’m pleased to get another chance to play in the Premier League. The club has been very good with me as well here."

Zarate produced an encouraging performance on his first start for the club as Watford recorded back-to-back league wins.

The forward said: “I’m very happy with the way I played but more than that I’m happy with the way the team played and getting three points. That’s more important.

“It was a very important game and we played against a team that is more or less where we are.

"It was very important for us to get the three points because we played at home but we managed to do it."

The striker admits there were some nervous moments against ten man Burnley during the closing stages of their 2-1 win.

Zarate said: “We should keep the ball more especially at the end. We tried to do it but unfortunately we couldn’t do it and we suffered in the last few minutes.

"We nearly conceded a goal at the end and we should have passed the ball more precisely."
