The tables were turned as Wealdstone faced a Maidenhead United side with revenge on their mind on New Year's Day, with two second-half goals seeing off Gordon Barlett's men.

Having beaten their hosts six days earlier, the Stones knew they would face an uphill struggle against a side unbeaten at home in the National League South since April.

And despite starting the game well, they were undone four minutes after the break when Dave Tarpey's effort took a cruel deflection off Eddie Oshodi to open the scoring.

Tarpey, the league's top scorer, would again become provider for Sean Marks to double the lead with time running out.

Before either strike, Wealdstone had the ball in the back of the Maidenhead net only seven minutes in, but Elliot Benyon's tap-in was ruled out for offside.

The hot-shot striker should have put the Stones in front soon before half-time, while Marks was also denied by Jonathan North at the other end.

Within minutes of the restart, the hosts forged a lead they had come to expect given their lofty league position.

Tarpey's run at the Wealdstone defence ended with him firing goalwards from the edge of the box, before the ball took two deflections off visiting defenders as it headed goalwards.

The last rebounded off the unfortunate Oshodi and beyond North, who was left understandably wrong-footed.

Tarpey should have got himself on the scoresheet with 20 minutes to go. Rene Steer embarked on a mazy run beyond Ryheem Sheckleford and played a low cross into the box – but somehow he flashed his effort wide.

He would make amends in feeding Marks a minute later, with his strike partner thumping a header beyond North to settle the game.

Benyon and substitute loanee Nick Freeman, who has since returned to Wycombe, both had efforts as Wealdstone looked for an unlikely response, but the hosts saw the game out as Gordon Bartlett's men remained 10th in the division.
