Watford defender Younes Kaboul believes captain Troy Deeney was unlucky to miss out on a place in the England squad.

The Hornets striker was touted as a possible selection in the latest squad, following the injury to Harry Kane, but was not picked this week by interim boss Gareth Southgate.

Kaboul said: “Of course when you look at his stats he deserves to be there [England squad] but it’s down to the manager of the national team to make that decision. But of course for me he deserves to be there."

Deeney is just one goal away from joining an elite group of players to score 100 for Watford after his latest effort in the draw against Bournemouth.

Kaboul said: “Troy is a striker that lives for goals. It’s the same for all our strikers at the club but he’s got that desire and dedication that will push him over 100 goals because he always wants more.

"He’s a threat for any defence in the Premier League and he’s doing well and will do even better."
