Manchester United trio Wayne Rooney, Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia will be fresh to face Watford at Vicarage Road on Sunday after being left out of the Red Devils' Europa League squad this week.

United have travelled to Holland to face Feyenoord in the European competition, fresh from their 2-1 home defeat to neighbours Manchester City on Saturday.

But the England captain, as well as Shaw and Valencia, have been left behind by Jose Mourinho ahead of the tie at Vicarage Road on Sunday, which it appears he is prioritising.

Rooney has played all but seven minutes of England and United games so far this season, while Shaw is still on the recovery from a long-term injury layoff last season.

Mourinho said: "He's [Rooney] played every game since the beginning of the season, he played also 90 minutes for England and he played 90 minutes last weekend.

"I want him to be fresh for the next Premier League match and at the same time it's the kind of attacking position where I have a lot of solutions and where people are working hard to have a chance.

"Antonio Valencia and Luke Shaw didn't travel with the team, they are positions were I have other solutions where I prefer to have fresh players for this game and for the game at the weekend.

"We play at midday on Sunday, so I try to have a strong team here and a strong team on Sunday."
