St Albans City have boosted their squad with the signing of Wealdstone midfielder Matt Ball.

The 23-year-old arrives following two years with National League South rivals Wealdstone, helping them to secure two mid-table finishes since their promotion from the Isthmian League in April 2014.

The former Northern Ireland Under-21 international came through the ranks at Norwich City, before moving to Stevenage ahead of the 2012/13 season.

After a loan spell at Farnborough, Ball made his league debut for Stevenage against Swindon Town in April 2013, playing the last 15 minutes after coming on as a substitute.

Ball then made his first start for the Boro on the final day of the 2013/14 season against MK Dons but this was to be one of his final appearances for the side, as he had spells on loan with Boreham Wood and Farnborough the following season, before being released in May 2014.

The midfielder then returned to Farnborough and his impressive form for the Hampshire club earned him a move to Wealdstone.

He has spent the past two years with the Stones, based in Grosvenor Vale in Ruislip, helping them consolidate in the National League South under manager Gordon Bartlett.

Ball becomes Ian Allinson’s sixth summer signing, with the Saints securing deals for Rhys Hoenes, Ben Herd, Josh Hill, Sam Merson and James Russell in recent weeks.
