Wealdstone have made a double swoop in the transfer market with former Football League striker Elliot Benyon and creative midfielder Danny Green joining the club.

The twin captures are a big boost to the Stones following last week’s high profile departures of Player of the Year Bradley Hudson-Odoi and midfielder Scott Davies.

The arrival of Green ends a 12-month pursuit for manager Gordon Bartlett, while Benyon arrives with a proven recent record for scoring goals at this level.

The former Bristol City trainee, who went on to play in the Football League for Torquay, Swindon, Wycombe Wanderers and Southend, plundered 17 goals in the National League South last season for relegated Hayes and Yeading United and his capture is seen as a feather in Wealdstone’s cap heading into next season.

The 28-year-old was Hayes and Yeading’s Player of the Year last term and Stones are delighted to have him on board.

Bartlett said: “It has taken a little while, but we are delighted Elliot has decided to sign. He has good experience and has always impressed us with his ability and work rate.

"Elliot scored 17 goals in the National South last season and he is comfortable playing as a lone striker or with a partner and we believe he displays exactly the attitude and qualities we are looking for to strengthen our squad.”

Stones CEO Mark Winkworth said: “It has been our intention to make quality signings right through the spine of the team this summer.

"Elliot is a proven striker and is such a hard worker on the pitch. I am sure that enthusiasm for hard work will rub off on everybody, and will be recognised by the supporters.”

The Stones are hoping new-boy Green, from Margate, will provide the ammunition for Benyon in the side next season.

The 25-year-old creative midfielder started his career with Harlow Town and then served Cheshunt, Bishop’s Stortford and Billericay before joining Dagenham & Redbridge on a three-year contract in 2010.

He made his professional debut for the League Two Daggers later that season but following his release he played for AFC Sudbury, Bishop’s Stortford again, Thurrock, Maidenhead and Margate.

Bartlett said: ‘I spoke to Danny last pre-season, so 12 months of patience has been rewarded and I am excited that his creativity and eye for a goal will be a big asset to the squad.

"Now in his mid-twenties, Danny is the type of player who possesses the ability to be a match winner and provide entertainment for the fans as well.”

Winkworth added: “We wanted Danny and Danny wanted Wealdstone. I met him and his father last week and they were keen to come to Wealdstone, having heard good things about the club. Danny is a fantastic addition to our squad for next season. He will bring a vast amount of experience and will give us some extra flare in the midfield.”
