Moor Park golfer Matt Wallace will bid to win a place on the European Tour when he competes in the final qualifying stage this weekend.

The 25-year-old is just one step away after finishing in a tie for sixth place in the second qualifying competition at Lumine Golf and Beach Club in Spain.

The Pinner-based golfer shot two opening rounds of five-under-par 66 before scoring 67 in the third round. A closing score of 71 helped Wallace record a total of 14-under-par to secure his passage through to the final event.

Wallace said: "I got off to a great start at the second stage of Q school. Having eight birdies in my first round was reassuring. In the second round I played really nicely with a bogey free round. In the third day I didn't play great but still managed to shoot four-under-par."

He continued: "The last round I struggled early on but managed to claw it back to shoot level par which was nice. It wasn't as comfortable as I may have made it out to have been. But it was awesome to be at the top of the leaderboard for three out of the four rounds."

Wallace will now compete at the PGA Catalunya Resort in Spain this weekend with the leading 25 players and ties earning membership for the European Tour.

The golfer has been speaking to his trainer and mental coach, former footballer Drewe Broughton, with his mindset focused on playing without fear as he chases a European Tour place.

Wallace said: "I've been talking with my good friend Drewe and my main goal for this week is to play without fear.

"I have proved that I can compete with some great players this year. So if I play without fear and do what I know I can do the results will happen. A Challenge Tour card will be a step in the right direction but I am confident that if I play well I can secure my European Tour card."

He added: "My game is in really good shape. Probably the best it has ever been. Mentally I'm in a great place and working hard with my coach Hugh Marr."

Wallace came close to playing in the Open Championship this summer when he finished 19th at Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club in local final qualifying after coming through the regional qualifier at Sandy Lodge.

He finished tied alongside Callum Shinkwin who has just secured his European Tour card after qualifying through the Challenge Tour standings. The pair are no strangers to each other and Wallace hopes to take inspiration from Shinkwin.

Wallace said: "Callum has done great. I caddied for him at the start of the year at the Abu Dhabi HSBC championship.

"It was a great experience for both of us, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Rory McIlroy and Henrik Stenson. We both felt it was somewhere we both wanted to be. He is a great player and I hope to be joining him on the main tour either this year or soon.

"I know Callum very well. We practice a lot and play together a lot too. To know he is on the European Tour is a great incentive for me."

Wallace has been playing on the Alps Tour this season and finished 11th in the standings.

He said: "My main objective was to finish in the top five on the Alps tour and I had a great chance following a consistent run of results.

"Unfortunately it came down to the last event in Israel where I was sitting in eighth place going into the final round only for it to be cancelled due to thunder and lightning.

"I am disappointed but the bigger picture is that I played great for a lot of the year. I was in contention a lot and it's only a matter of time before one drops."
