Ten-man Wealdstone saw their tale of woe continue on Saturday as they were beaten 1-0 at the death by Eastbourne Borough with midfielder Matt Ball playing 55 minutes in goal.

The Stones were dealt a setback prior to the game when goalkeeper Alex Lynch - initially signed on loan to cover the injured Jon North - was recalled by parent club Wycombe Wanderers.

Without a goalkeeper on the bench it was typical of Stones' luck this season that North would not complete the game. So it proved as ten minutes before half-time, the former Watford stopper was controversially sent off for handling the ball outside the penalty area.

It fell to Ball to play the remainder of the game between the sticks and the former Norwich City man looked set to record an unlikely clean sheet until Eastbourne's Nathaniel Pinney struck in the 90th minute to rob the Stones of a hard-earned point.

Kick-off was delayed by six minutes as the referee requested two players from each side returned to the dressing rooms to correct their playing equipment.

Stones should have taken the lead as early as the first minute but skipper Wes Parker failed to direct his effort on target.

On the half hour mark when Ball, still in a non-goalkeeping role, brilliantly fed Shaun Lucien in acres of space but the wide player’s strike was blocked expertly by Lewis Carey.

Harrow Times:

Borough were restricted to long-range strikes but both sides, who were winless and pointless going into the clash, took a cautious approach throughout.

The away side took until 20 minutes into the second period to have their first real strike on goal but the home side held firm.

It looked like Stones would hold out for a valuable point and could even have snatched a winner when substitute Bradley Hudson-Odoi headed wide from fellow replacement Connor Calcutt's cross.

But from a last gasp attack, started by the advancing Carey, Eastbourne stole the win to send Stones to joint-bottom of the National League South in the third minute of injury time.

Stones face big spending Margate away on Tuesday. The consolation for Gordon Bartlett will be the return from suspension of former Gate striker Jefferson Louis.
