Nick Gubbins hit his second half-century of the match as Middlesex reached 148 for three by lunch on the final day of the LV=County Championship match at Taunton, needing a further 254 to beat Somerset.

The 21-year-old left-hander added 78 to his first innings 92, hitting 10 fours and 2 sixes, before being bowled by Abdur Rehman with the total on 137. Somerset’s bowling attack was weakened by the absence of Jamie Overton, unable to play any part after suffering an ankle injury the previous evening.

Lewis Gregory struck two early blows after Middlesex began the day on 31 without loss as Sam Robson was caught at second slip for 15 and Nick Compton lost two stumps shouldering arms to an inswinger, having made only four.

From 45 for two, Adam Voges helped Gubbins add 92 for the third wicket in 20.1 overs and was unbeaten on 34 at lunch, having been joined by James Franklin.
