Wealdstone’s eleven-match unbeaten league run finally came to an end on Saturday as they were beaten 3-1 by Weston-super-Mare at Grosvenor Vale.

Gordon Bartlett’s side paid the price for a woeful first 20 minutes when they conceded three goals, two of them penalties, to crash to their first Conference South loss since November 8 when they were defeated by league-leaders Boreham Wood.

In what was virtually a repeat of their lamentable start against Hemel Hempstead in Tuesday’s abandoned fixture at Vauxhall Road, the Stones failed to get to grips with a lively attack from the start.

And despite a far better second period when the rejuvenated home side finally got the bit between their teeth, a three-goal deficit proved insurmountable.

The Seagulls dominated from the first whistle and took the lead after only ten minutes when Joe McClennan crossed to the far post for Oliver Watkins to fire home.

And seven minutes later the visitors’ lead was doubled.

Watford loanee Luke O’Nien was harshly adjudged to have handled whilst prone on the ground and the penalty was awarded. Tristan Plummer struck the post but Dayle Grubb made minimal fuss of tucking in the rebound.

Wealdstone’s nightmare opening period was complete when the Seagulls snatched a third and their second from the penalty spot.

Grubb took the kick and sent Jonathan North the wrong way to make it 3-0 after just 20 minutes.

A subdued Richard Jolly ought to have pulled one back before the break but keeper Luke Purnell pulled off an outstanding save to deny the forward.

The second half was an entirely different affair with Wealdstone dominating and attacking relentlessly down the slope.

Substitutes Jonny Wright and Nathan Mavila were at the centre of the Stones’ resurgence and spirits were lifted when they pulled a goal back.

Harrow Times:

Striker Wright was hauled down in the area and centre-back Sean Cronin netted the penalty with typical aplomb.

Bartlett’s side continued to create chances and Jolly spurned at least three presentable opportunities without finding a way past Purnell.

There was still time for Seagulls replacement Kane Ingram to be sent off needlessly for a second yellow card but the result was beyond saving.

Wealdstone will look to bounce back when they travel to Staines Town on Saturday. Meanwhile, the re-arranged tie at Hemel Hempstead Town has been set for Tuesday, February 17.

Wealdstone: North; Martin, Parker (c), Cronin, Watts; Davies, Corcoran (Lucien 74), Ball (Mavila 45), O’Nien; Jolly, McGleish (Wright 45).

Subs: Godfrey, Hamblin.

Attendance: 600.
