Gareth Thomas has been returned as MP for Harrow West, the election results are less than a week old.

But Mr Thomas has now decided that solely concentrating on his constituents isn’t enough, he wants to be Mayor of London.

So now a large part of his time will go to campaigning for this, and if successful, presumably giving up his seat and, therefore, triggering a costly by-election.

I’m guessing his decision to stand for mayor didn’t come overnight. So why did he not mention this intention during the election campaign?

Surely the electorate of Harrow West had a right to know his intentions and then could have had their say at the ballot box.

I can only think of one reason. If he doesn’t become mayor, he will still have a job for the next five years.
