Looking at the Conservative manifesto, claiming the deficit had been halved, reminds me of their last election promise to eliminate the deficit altogether with five years of cuts.
But this did not happen and we are only halfway there. That they claim success suggests their priority is to make cuts rather than eliminate the deficit.
If they win this election, it is expected that another programme of even severer cuts will follow, but what confidence can we have that the deficit will go?
Big cuts have a negative impact on revenue and lead to greater borrowing, hence the elimination of the deficit fades farther into the distance.
