The Broadwalk Centre can now announce that more than 1,500 people visited the ‘Get to Know Cancer’ pop-up shop, which was open to shoppers and residents from September 23 to October 12.

This pop-up shop gave people the opportunity to seek support and advice about any worries and questions they may have had about cancer.

After speaking with 1,547 adults and 156 children during the 18-day period, the scheme was deemed a great success and more than 15 per cent of those who had a nurse consultation were referred onto their GP for further investigation.

The pop-up shop was a great opportunity for anyone who had any concerns about cancer to talk to a specialist nurse in an informal environment, but we urge those who weren’t able to come along to speak to their GP if they have any worries.

It is estimated that more than one in three people will develop some form of cancer during their lifetime, but many are still too afraid to speak about any worrying symptoms they may have, or are not aware of the early signs and symptoms associated with certain types of cancer.

Cancer is the biggest cause of premature death (295 early deaths each year). The key to cancer survival is early detection, so improving take-up of screening could ensure that more cancers are identified and treated earlier, increasing the likelihood of survival and decreasing the need for more radical treatment.
