This week, we found out that Harrow has the highest proportion of jobs paid below the living wage in London. One in three people working in our borough don’t earn enough to pay the bills.

Let’s get this straight.

These are not the people of Councillor Susan Hall’s nightmares. People who, legend has it, haunt our land in search of handouts.

These are people who go to work every day. Who play by the rules. Who are putting in to our society.
But their hard work doesn’t pay enough for them to get by. And that means they need to lean on the state for help with housing, childcare, and even to afford their weekly shop.

Working people lacking the means to afford a decent life. That’s the high price of low pay.

Harrow Borough Council pays the living wage to its staff. We need Harrow businesses to do the same.
