Hannah David’s letter (“NHS improvements can be seen”, Your Views, June 26) prompts me to make two points The first is that her enthusiasm for the NHS reminds me of the fact that at its inception in the immediate post-war years by the Labour government, the Tories voted against it.

The second is that she repeats the misapprehension that the recession was caused by Labour.

There was a time when Tory propagandists were more careful and referred to “the legacy of the last government” without saying directly that Labour had caused the recession.

With an election coming up some Tories are going for the outright untruth.

The recession was caused by a worldwide financial crisis started by banks in America.

All countries suffered, making it imperative to reduce national debt.

The last Labour budget planned to reduce the debt by 50 per cent in four years, which was manageable.

When the Tories came in, their plan was 100 per cent reduction in five years, which had the immediate effect of choking off the small growth in the economy which had then appeared.

There has therefore been four years of stagnation in which the British people have paid too high a price for the beginnings of recovery.
