Give a few hours for a good deed

I am writing to urge everyone, of any faith and of none, to consider giving just a few hours of their time this Sunday to support a local charity.

Sunday is the Jewish community’s Mitzvah Day, literally meaning “good deed” day. It is a day when Jewish people up and down the country will give not their money, but a little bit of their time to help those less fortunate than themselves. This Mitzvah Day more than 20,000 volunteers will collect food for those in need, clean up a local park, host a tea party for refugees, support the homeless, visit an old people’s home, or do one of 250 other good deed projects. At Belmont Synagogue in Stanmore volunteers and their children will be visiting the local Norwood Home on Old Church Lane.

We are going to entertain the residents as well as make them gifts. Our youth will help serve tea and coffee to the over 65s who are visiting our synagogue.

Mitzvah Day enjoys the support not just of the whole Jewish community, but also Christian, Hindu, Sikh and Muslim groups who are also involved in various projects across the country.

So whatever their faith, in these difficult times, I hope your readers will join us on Sunday to give just a little of their time to help those less fortunate than themselves.
