The Israeli-Palestine conflict, on-going now for decades, has once again resulted in violence. With Hamas firing it’s rockets into Israel a new chapter in the violent history between these two countries is being written.

Even at this moment in time Israeli tanks and soldiers are advancing from the Palestinian border into Gaza City. Following a comprehensive ground offensive, Israel have followed up with an overnight air-strike. The reported death-toll is estimated at 13 Israeli soldiers and over 1,300 Palestinians, not to mention the thousands injured and left without a house as their homes have been ruthlessly destroyed by the Israeli war machine.

Back here in the UK, we live in safety, with the damage done by the Israeli tanks limited to only what we see on our TV screens.

Nevertheless, the UK has an enormous responsibility for the lives of those who reside in and around the Gaza Strip. Our leaders know that every day that goes by without a meaningful ceasefire agreement between the two warring governments, more innocent blood is being shed; blood which will stain the hands of Gordon Brown and co. for ever.

Egypt has been an instrumental mediator in trying to reach an agreement between Hamas and the Israeli government. However, they will need the full-support of the UK, the US and every government which has the power to stop the number of innocent civilians being murdered every day.

The US recognises Israel’s right to defend itself from attackers. However, it must also recognise that the war between Israel and Palestine is the proverbial David vs Goliath of today. The Palestinians simply cannot compete against the Israeli arsenal of weapons. The accuracy of which is the subject of much debate.

The Israeli generals reassure the world that their aim is to take out Hamas militants and their rocket launchers. However, the missiles launched by the Israelis have been prone to ‘navigating errors’which are more likely to find a Palestinian hospital or UN school than a Palestine war leader.

The fragile 22-day ceasefire was abruptly ended on Tuesday 27th after a Palestinian road-side bomb wrecked an Israeli jeep. This was followed by a reply from the Israeli army as a helicopter attack killed a Palestinian farmer. Now Israeli tanks have moved deeper into Gaza territory.

The rest of the world can no longer stand still and wait until it’s too late. Sooner or later,if allowed to go on, this conflict will flow from the streets of Gaza and into our own streets and neighbourhoods. Demonstrations outside the Israeli embassy In London have already been marred by violence, showing how inaction by the leaders of Western and Arab countries could soon find themselves fighting a war in their own back-yard against fanatics from both sides.

Both sides must be made aware of how much they stand to lose from this conflict, not only in the death of their own nationals, but also the financial losses which could cripple two struggling countries affected by the current financial climate. Something must be done.

Every country who has the power to stop this massacre and chooses to do nothing is just as guilty of murder as the suicide bombers in Israel or the stray missiles in Gaza.
