A Harrow man has been given a “once in a lifetime opportunity” to sail his boat in the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant.

Andrew Bernstein, of Station Road, Harrow, applied to take part in the event on June 3, in which up to 1,000 boats will muster across the River Thames alongside The Queen, who will be aboard the Royal Barge, the Spirit of Chartwell.

Mr Bernstein, who owns a car hire firm in Harrow, said: “I know there must have been thousands of applicants – three boats applied for every one place, so I’m absolutely honoured to have been given this once in a lifetime opportunity to take part in this glorious moment in history.”

The 46-year-old has been hooked on boating since 2000, when a client suggested he sign up to the Royal Yachting Association. He has owned his motor cruiser, which he named Knot Arf, for three years and keeps it moored on the Thames at Hampton court.

He added: “I’m very excited to part of this event. I will be talking 12 members of my friends and family aboard the boat – it’s going to be so tough to work out who to pick."
