A woman has been hailed a "local hero" for her work with vulnerable children and young adults.

Laira Gold, from Harrow, is a volunteer with the Ignite Trust, a local charity which helps youngsters stay away from gangs and re-engage with education or employment.

She was one a number of people from across the UK who were recognised as local heroes by Premier Christian Communications as part of its Society Sunday celebration on June 10.

The award was presented at at national ceremony at Methodist Central Hall, in Westminster, where recipients were interviewed and received prayer as well as a framed certificate and bouquet.

Peter Kerridge, chief executive of Premier Christian Communications said: “We are delighted to recognise Laura as one of Society Sunday’s Local Heroes. To see her selfless compassion in action is an absolute inspiration and exactly the kind of role model we want to highlight through this campaign."

Lynne Burke, director of Ignite, said: “ Laura is a real blessing. She always has a smile on her face and a sense of genuine compassion for those she is working with."

With more than 500 churches around the country taking part, Society Sunday takes place on the nearest Sunday to the Queen’s official birthday. The campaign is officially recognised by the UK Government department for communities and local government.

Now in its fourth year, churches are encouraged to pray for the Queen, civic leaders and "local heroes" and celebrate the ways they are making a positive difference in our communities.
