People across the borough are being encouraged to donate unwanted items to charity rather than dump them on the streets.

Caren Duhig, who created the #Fixit Harrow Network in a bid to try and encourage improvements in environmental and social issues within the borough, has teamed up with St Luke’s Hospice, which is based in Pinner.

She is hoping donations of furniture or electrical items will help reduce fly-tipping in the borough and stop local authorities spending thousands of pounds cleaning the rubbish up when they could instead invest more into the different communities.

Ms Duhig said: “We are trying to create a social, environmental, and economical change within our area. The illegal fly tipping of beds, sofas, mattresses and furniture in general costs our local authorities thousands of pounds each year to investigate and clear when they could be putting that money to good use within our community.

“Fly-tipping is a serious offence because of the health and safety hazards it creates for our residents and if an offender is caught, they could be faced with a maximum penalty fine.”

“As a community organisation, #Fixit Harrow Network is supporting St Luke’s Hospice by encouraging local people to donate their sellable unwanted items to this local charity. We want to raise awareness of their important work and try to reduce the amount of fly-tipping within our borough. Let’s work together and #fix our local community.”

Do you have unwanted items which could raise money for the hospice?

St Luke’s has 18 shops in Harrow and Brent which help to fund free end of life care support in the community. They welcome donations of clothes, jewellery, books, furniture, electrical items and much more.
