Drivers who stay in their warm homes while their car defrosts outside are breaking the law.
It's a common thing to do. You step outside into the freezing morning to find your car windscreen and windows covered in a layer of ice.
It can take ages for your car to warm up enough to melt it away - so you head back inside into the warmth while the ice slowly melts away.
But if you leave your vehicle unattended with the engine running in the cold weather you're breaking the law.
The warning came after south west Hertfordshire experienced the coldest night of the season with temperatures dropping as low as -3C.
The warnings come as six cars were stolen in just 30 minutes as they were left by owners defrosting them on Tuesday morning, the Birmingham Mail reports.
The Central Motorway Police Group tweeted: “Seriously!!! That’s six cars stolen in last 30 mins just because people have left them unattended to defrost. Come on people, don’t do it!!”
The Met Office is expecting slightly less chilly evenings for for the rest of the week but the colder temperatures are likely to return at the weekend.
