A man charged with causing the death of a pensioner by dangerous driving has been jailed for three years.

Al-Karim Visram, 38, of Pine Gardens, Ruislip, was disqualified from driving for three years and jailed for three years at Harrow Crown Court, on November 30.

Visram was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving following a trial at the same court on November 9.

Visram was driving a black Hyundai in Alexandra Avenue, Harrow at 6.10pm on March 15.

The Hyundai car hit a Hansraj Damji, 78, as he crossed a zebra crossing.

Visram drove his vehicle to a side road and ran over Mr Damji's legs, causing him further injuries.

He was taken to hospital where he was treated for a broken neck, broken back and broken leg.

However, Mr Damji died on April 19 after contracting pneumonia.

A special post-mortem examination revealed that Mr Damji's died from pneumonia and injuries to the left leg and spine.

Detective Sergeant Jane Mallett of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “Not only did Visram's initial act of dangerous driving cause significant injuries to Mr Damji, he compounded this by running over him a second time when it was impossible to see clearly through his damaged windscreen.

“I hope now that the culprit has been sentenced, Mr Damji's family can have some form of closure.”
