Residents who witnessed "a child nearly get run over" outside a Stanmore secondary last week say the council needs to crack down on nuisance parent drivers.

Paul Noble said the narrow cul-de-sac roads of Burnell Gardens and Thislecroft Gardens could not cope with the dramatically increasing volume of traffic coming in and out of Park High School.

He said months of dealing with inconsiderate parents blocking residents' drives, illegal parking around the school gates and aggressive confrontations with nuisance drivers had culminated in a heart-stopping near miss on Friday, May 6.

Mr Noble said: "A near miss to a child be struck, which I witnessed, in Burnell Gardens on the evening of May 6.

"Children come in and out of the gate of Centenary Park straight in to Burnell Garden.

"A car driving quite fast nearly struck the child - if it weren't for the father of the child and another man who sprinted to prevent it."

He said the following morning on Saturday, May 7, when parents were dropping their children at the school for a Stagecoach lesson, one driver of a black range rover thoughtlessly blocked a resident's driveway while other parents parked inconsiderately.

Mr Noble said: "Instead of simply moving one driver became aggressive and it was touch and go whether an physical incident would flare up.

"This is the natural consequence of such high volumes of traffic linked to Park High School and the narrow cul-de-sac roads of Burnell Gardens and Thislecroft Gardens.

"The traffic issue with the school is simply worse now. I would ask the council to meaningfully tackle this problem.

"At the very minimum we need traffic calming measures to avoid God forbid an accident. Speed bumps. And CCTV at the school facing the roads that can be used by Harrow traffic wardens to deal with nuisance parent drivers."

Kalpana Kanbi, who lives in Burnell Gardens, branded the traffic in the mornings "an absolute joke" and wondered if there had to be a fatality before Harrow Council did anything to help.

She said: "This morning I could not even leave my driveway due to the number of cars dropping their children to school. "Burnell Gardens is clearly marked with yellow lines, keep clear and parking signs, but these parents just don’t care.

"Why are these parents not fined? If there is no penalty they will just continue to dismiss all notices.

"On weekends there are cars zooming down the road. What action is being taken? Why are speed bumps not installed? The area between the park gate on Burnell Gardens and alley also needs attention - maybe a stop sign for driver or zebra crossing as well as speed bumps. Why is nothing being done? Does it need a fatality to get any notice?"

Cllr Graham Henson, responsible for environment, crime and community safety said: “We are appalled about the behaviour of a few inconsiderate drivers around Park High school. Dangerous driving and aggressive behaviour is not only unacceptable – but is a terrible example set on young children. Or worse someone could be seriously injured.

“The safety of children is a top priority and we work closely with schools to tackle parking and congestion in the local area. We are working closely with Park High on a robust travel plan and as part of road safety improvement plans we are encouraging walking and cycling to school to reduce car use. We are also exploring options which includes a car free zone, a 20 mph zone and working with the police to increase enforcement in the area.”
