A popular and gifted sportsman who died after being punched in a nightclub has been remembered by classmates and friends.

Archie Lloyd, a student at the £36,000-a-year independent Harrow School, in Harrow-on-the-Hill, died on August 6 while on holiday with friends in Malia, Crete.

The group had been visiting the Greek town, popular for its nightlife, to celebrate the end of their A-levels.

However the 18-year-old Harrovian was punched by a barman during a row at the Cloud Nine nightclub.

He was later found dead in his hotel room by his friends.

Friends and classmates have taken to social media to pay their respects to the popular sportsman, who played for the school’s football and cricket teams.

Twitter user @EmilyRFM said: “Unbelievable news about Archie Lloyd, always so tragic when anyone passes away but so heartbreaking at 18 & to such a lovely boy, RIP x”

Another friend said: “I can’t believe this has happened he was a beautiful person inside and out so loyal and honest.

“Always put a smile on my face and made me laugh.”

His family have set up a legacy fund in Archie’s memory ahead of his funeral this week, which will be held at Winchester Cathedral on Thursday.

A spokesman for the school said: “Harrow School confirms that one of its leavers has died while on holiday abroad in what we understand to be tragic circumstances.

“Our prayers go out to the boy's family and friends who are coming to terms with this tragic loss.”
