Households have just 17 days left to nominate a community hero for this year’s Harrow’s Heroes Awards.

The Harrow’s Heroes awards ceremony is an annual event that recognises and celebrates the work of volunteers in the borough.

Organised by Harrow Council and sponsored by the Harrow Times, the competition acts and the council’s way of saying thank you to the hard-working and often unrecognised dedicated volunteers.

Hundreds of nominations have already flooded in to the civic centre, off Station Road, Harrow, before judging takes places.

For anyone wishing to nominate an inspirational volunteer, the deadline has now been extended to September 7, leaving them with 17 days to put their nomination forward.

Volunteers can be nominated for one of six awards available this year, which include:

YOUNG VOLUNTEER AWARD: For individuals who are 25-years-old or under, this award recognises outstanding contributions from young volunteers in the borough.

BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER AWARD This award has been created for individuals who have developed relationships between organisations or individuals - either in their community, across London, nationally or internationally.

COMMUNITY CHAMPION AWARD The community champion award recognises individual Community Champions who have demonstrated commitment to communicating and working for and with their community. This category is only open to members of the Community Champions network.

INSPIRING VOLUNTEER AWARD Individuals who have demonstrated personal courage or who have overcome obstacles to help others or encourage those around them can be put forward for the inspiring volunteer award.

LIFELONG VOLUNTEER AWARD This award is for people who have demonstrated an ongoing contribution to the community for 20 years or more.

VOLUNTEER TEAM AWARD This award aims to recognise teamwork in an outstanding project or activity that has benefited the community, or the exceptional contribution of a group of volunteers in a committee or trustee role.

The judges will also select a person or team from all the nominations received for the overall Judge’s Volunteer of the Year Award.

This will be made at the judges’ discretion to a person or team who has made an outstanding contribution through their volunteering.

All winners will receive a crystal trophy and a cash prize for their chosen charity, and all nominees will be invited to the awards ceremony on November 3 and will receive a certificate of recognition.
