A college teacher has swapped break times and detentions for a coaching whistle as he helps a national football team to victory.

Stanmore College sports teacher Adrian Creamer has helped the island nation of Guam achieve historic wins in the first two rounds of their World Cup qualification campaign.

The Guam national team, who had previously never won or drawn a single World Cup qualifier, defeated Turkmenistan 1-0 and India 2-1 to remain undefeated and on top of group D.

The Stanmore College teacher, who is also the Watford Academy goalkeeping coach, took on the role of goalkeeping coach of the Guam national team early this year as Guam took on Hong Kong and Singapore in international friendly matches.

He said: “Guam has gone from being ranked 197 in the world to being in and around 160 – that is a staggering level of progress. The belief has been transformed within the squad.

“There was a time when it was simply a case of playing to keep the score down and that definitely isn’t the case anymore.

“For the matches against Hong Kong and Singapore there was a genuine belief that the team could win.”

Along with musician Ronan MacManus, who works with students at Stanmore College, Mr Creamer also wrote a World Cup song for the team called Biba Guahan – which has now become the country’s football anthem.

The national side will play Iran next in Tehran at the Azadia stadium in front of 100,000 people, with former Manchester United and Real Madrid coach Carlos Quieroz in charge.
