Thousands of pounds were raised when an opticians hosted a sunglasses event for charity.

New Vision Opticians, in Alexandra Avenue, Rayners Lane, organised for boxes of discontinued and discounted Ray Ban sunglasses to be brought into the store as it hosted a fundraiser for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

The event was organised to raise money for the Smile for Shiv campaign, in honour of four-year-old Shiv Thakrar, who suffers from the condition.

Aarti Sawhney, whose family runs the opticians, said: “It was a really successful event for a lovely little boy who has a muscle disease. He is only four but they might not be able to find a cure in time to help him.

“It was a nice community-spirited event and a lot of people came down to donate and help out, which was lovely.

“Everyone worked really hard for this and the family were really touched.”

More than £2,300 was raised, with shoppers buying sunglasses at a discounted rate as well as making donations.

There was a raffle, and cakes were handed out to shoppers and passers by in exchange for donations.
