A teenager is set to star in the annual Christmas lectures presented by the Royal Institution on the BBC.

Zara Rashid, 11, from Harrow, attended the filming of the historic science and engineering lectures in London on December 13 and helped lecturer Professor Danielle George with a demonstration for the show.

This year's lectures,Sparks Will Fly, How to Hack Your Home, are presented by Prof George, an electrical engineer Manchester University.

The program will be broadcast as part of the BBC’s Christmas schedule on BBC Four at 8pm on December 29, 30 and 31.

Zara came on stage to test out the world’s first electric lollipop, which was developed by a research team at City University in London.

She said: “I thought the electronic lollipop was really cool, it was hard to work out exactly what the flavour was with just the lollipop but when there was a smell as well that made the taste much sharper. I really enjoyed the Christmas lectures.”
